Default Vivarium Size -ADVICE PLEASE - 05-11-2011, 03:56 PM

I have a glass vivarium with a wooden frame with the lid at the top to open. its quite small however i did read that they dont need much space.

The only problem i have is that as the lid is on the top and not a sliding front door is i think that my leo is getting scared everytime we open it as we have to pick things up from above him. Weve had him 3 weeks now and he is still very skittish and hides from us a lot.

We had calci sand and got rid of it after reading impaction stories but when we tried to take him out he became very scared and almost jumped straight out of the vivarium.

I decided to wait until he was in his moist hide and scooped out 99% of the calcisand and replaced with kitchen towel for now (will look at gettin tiles for the new vivarium but would a tank 92 x 47 x 53 cm be too big for one leo?

If so can anyone advice the best size for them and if so a good retailler for one

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT AS I WANT ME LEO TO BE HAPPY!

A decent size tank for one leo needs to be at least 2ftx1ftx1ft, then for ever extra leo you add you need to another sq foot of floor space.

Tbh your leo is prob still settling in, I attack my leo's from the top of the tank and there quite use to my hands flying in out the sky as it were.

Easy way to help them to settle in is to just rest your hand in the tank for a few minutes a time so that they realize
your not at threat.

cool thanks for that.

not sure if you would know but a vivarium i found hasnt got a slot with a glass sheet on the bottom so im trying to find out how i would put the heat mat in. If i was to place it on top of the wood could i in theory place vinyl tiles directly on top or would it melt/burn it? and the same for the wood?

should i get some kind of material to go on either side of the heat mat to avoid any kind of burning etc?
