Default Saying hi and after some advice please : ) - 25-08-2011, 06:08 PM

Hi all new to this forum and new to the whole reptile world in general, I posted this in the introduction section but thought it might be an idea to post here too. After lots of consideration the family has decided we would like a leopard gecko. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas where we could see about getting one from? We have been to pets at home today and they only had one 6-7 months old, however the woman in the shop wasn't for letting us hold it touch it or anything and kept telling me about it hissing and shouting at her! Kind of put me off a bit, I have been doing lots of research and it isnt something we are going to rush into, but i really would like to get one from someone who knows about its history, temperament etc so wondered if i might be better going to a more specialist place. If thats the case does anyone know of somewhere good to go. I live in Todmorden Lancashire. Thanks in advance of any help or advice.

Hiya
i got my youngest from pets at home, he was 3/4 months old and had already dropped his tail, he was so scared of everything and wasnt for being handled, but it just made him all the more special to me, they hiss when they're scared or not happy, mine still sometimes will hiss if you startle him, he chirps/barks in the night, but now its only when he wants to be out, like a cry for attention lol, hes nearly 10 months now but will only come to me, pets at home arent the best place for any animal as they dont get history but i was advised from a breeder not to go there as their stock is prone to internal parasites or something, but dont qoute me on that its just what i have heard, i got my crested gecko's, and beardies from a breeder in Kent, she had leo's too along with several other breeds, it was abit of a drive for me but well worth it as she was able to tell me everything, including showing me the parents and a previous batch, my partner got his baby leo from the reptile section of our local koi company, but again there was no history, your best bet is to maybe google for a local breeder or try the 118 site, temperament/personality isnt so much an issue if they are young enough as you can actually kind of train them to accept being handled and not be scared, its just a little bit more difficult if they are older, i have a new challenge myself as ive accuired an adult off someone who didnt interact with him at all, hes very timid, but il try fix that :-) but i would definetely advise a private breeder so you know what you're getting, and sometimes people advertise on here too! whatever you choose you wont be dissapointed, they are such lovely little creatures :-)

i would go to these breeders based in bristol http://www.speckled-gecko.co.uk/
i purchased my 2 leopard gecko hatchlings who are now 6 weeks old ( reverse mac snows) from there and they are healthy and active.

also they were a reasonable price considering their breed

bit late for a reply but heyho im also new to the site and setting up for some leos,(these will be my first reptiles) i have read in various places to ask to handle before buying so you can see any obvious illness or whatever. and having bought plenty of fish in the past from pets at home i dont think id buy from there. if there reptile stock is anything like their fish stock anyway. the fish we've had from there never last long and always seem to be a 'dodgy batch'.
