Default only eats Locusts - 08-02-2010, 12:47 PM

first of all HI,

i have 3 leos (1 male SHCT, 2 females blizzard and bell albino)
i got each of them from different shops, all three were given crickets as the main food, with the sound of them in the tubs i was forced to chage to locust (thanks wife) i have tried them on mealworms but they just dont seam interested, however all of the babbies love them. has anyone got a good idea on how i can get them eating mealworms? i am currently spending £10 a week on locust (4 x medium tubs) and would like to cut the cost a little.

p.s. the babbies now only go to one shop who give them mealworms and locust as a weekly treat.

lol some leo's just never seem to get round to liking or eating mealies
If the leo's are healthy and with good fat supplies on their tails you could try just leaving them fresh mealies every day in a shallow dish and not giving them any hoppers for a week or so but even them they may not go for it .... babies are a lot easier then adults ;-)
with the cost of the hoppers you may find it easier on your wallet to get them online and in bulk.... I buy my hoppers in bags of 100 for just over eleven quid a bag ~ http://www.livefoods.co.uk/index.php?cPath=94 and keep them in large upright fauneriums with an egg crate (this comes in the bag with them) and then feed them cabbage, dark greens etc

thanks for the tip i will give them a try this week on the mealies, in all honesty they could do with a week off the food, they have the fat stores to keep them going for a month LOL

i cant wait for them to kick back into breading again, role on may.

I was looking around at online live food suppliers last night and came across the live foods website.

I'm guessing you would highly recommend them sleepydee?

Thanks Sleepydee, I'm having the same issue - my Gecko much prefers the locusts to the mealies - the only way I can entice him to try a mealie is to get it out the dish and put it in front of him, hoping it wriggles about a bit! so I might try buying in bulk myself. Do you find that many of the locusts get too big before they get eaten? My Leo is about 4 months old so I'm feeling him fairly small ones at present.

Cheers

Simon

*nods* I would recommend them yes ~ I use them for 95% of my livefood orders and have found them to be good and their customer service is good too

I get various sizes ~ medium/small (for juveniles) and medium (for adults and other larger reps) and generally if kept at room temp and fed regular yes they do grow but not enough to outgrow the leo.... as you've only got the one it may pay to try a half bag (50) of the small/medium to start with feeding him the larger ones first which allows the small ones to grow a bit before being chomped
