Default How often do i feed my 4month old leopard gecko? - 16-10-2011, 04:17 PM

Hi All,

I recently bought a 4 month old (so im told) leopard gecko and want to find out how much and often i should be feeding them and recomended feed.

On his first day i fed him around 5 medium black crickets and 3 waxworms (i know these are a treat usually).

Can anyone advise on the best amounts/types of insects and how often?

Can be tricky grabbin the crickets if anyone has any good ideas to catch em!

Thanks
Dom

easiest way is to leave a dish of meal worms in the viv 24/7 and just keep count of how many and how often your gecko is eating them, also wise to invest in a set of digital scales so that you can weigh them every wee to ensure they are growing/putting on weight.

honestly stay away from wax worms, not only are the addictive but there high in fats etc, there the gecko equivalent of big macs and fries, not good for the little bugger.

if you wanna make the crickets easier to catch either keep them in the fridge as this slows them down or if you want to make them easier for the gecko to catch just break a cple of there legs before feeding them to the gecko

Hi thanks for that. Ive left a bowl of mealworms in his vivarium and he seems to be happily munching them as and when he wants.

do you know any sites that sell scales? ive tried some local pet stores but none had any in stock.

I also had another question about handling. I have read a lot that at 4 months they can still be very skittish. everytime i approach him he runs into one of the hides. im not trying to grab him im simply just placing my hand down flat in the middle and leaving it there then after around 10 minutes i take my hand out.

Is this just a case of time and patience before they start to feel more comfortable with me?
i dont want to cause any stress by persistently doing this so as he has a new surrounding would you advise to leave him for a while to get settled before i start placing my hand in.

as mentioned i havent in anyway been cornering him with my hand or trying to pick him up.

any advice would be great!

THANKS
