Yes really
Calci sand is made of calcium carbonate
As leos regulate their own calcium intake the substrate encourages them to eat it.
Hence they do and become impacted as it clumps together like cat litter they cant digest it at all nor can they pass it correctly.

This well known reptile company refuse to stock it at all

If its a baby leo then kitchen roll all the time until it reaches about 8 months
After that repti carpet, tiles, lino or slate.
Anything that is not a solid substrate can cause impactation

Personally we keep all of our leos on kitchen roll as its easy to clean etc.
We have over 80 leos lol so you can imagin how much cleaning that is.
It really depends if you want a natural look if you do i would say lino and bits of slate from b&q

At My College (Agriculture college) we have 5 geckos and we did have one anulated but due to a bite from a leo had to be put down and they have always been kept on calci sand and they must be in there teens and they have had no problems even though there is no calcium powder in there with them and there food is dusted a few times a week....

i know people say that there geckos eat the sand but surely if they are given the correct amount of calcium in there diet there need to eat that sand will not be there...

Your college mixes species?
Thats bad enough with out the calci sand!
Its nothing to do with the amount of calcium.
Leos self regulate their calcium intake themselfs so they will hunt out the calcium in the calic sand of which only 2% is digestable!
I would never put any animal at that sort of risk

Aww She/He is very cute. you shouldnt be using normal playing sand because if you get water on it, it will clump up into balls and it could possibly eat it and choke on it!! USE SPECIAL SAND, JUST A LITTLE TIP
