Default New leo questions - 20-08-2010, 11:32 PM

Hey so i got a new leo from gumtree and she is lovely really well tempered and great to handle. But i have a couple of questions first she seems huge compared to my male although he is on the skinny side just starting to gain the weight lost during his little hunger strike lol

She just seems abit on the large side but everything about her is a good deal bigger than my other the eyes esp. The question is is it normal for her not to lift herself completly up when she moves ? she keeps her belly real close to the ground if not sliding along it.

She also has a little skin left over from a bad shed on her belly whats the best way to go about removing it without stressing her too much ?

And lastly she only has tiny little toes on her is this going to be a problem for her ? I think she only has one full toe left so only one claw to help her grip. The toes on the fron are close to a normal size but those on the back are little more than nubs.

Thanks

do you know how old she is? belly dragging along the ground doesnt sound normal, are there any dark patches? could possibly be impaction if so. if not she's probably just fat or maybe gravid?

stuck shed can normally be removed by soaking in some luke-warm water for 10 mins or so. the toe thing shouldn't be a problem, she just won't have very good grip. it sounds to me like she has been a bit neglected by her previous owner so might be worth a trip to the vet just to make sure everything is ok.

another point, not sure what your setup is but i personally wouldn't advise housing the two together; firstly they should be the same size (prevents bullying etc, especially with eating - don't want to risk another hunger strike) and secondly the male might stress the female out with mating, we had a male and female in a viv and ended up getting another female to give him a bit of choice and let the her have a break lol. hope this helps!

*nods* woul add to this that belly dragging/not able to walk correctly could also be a sign of mbd ~ I would advise having her checked by a herp vet as well as having a feacal test done for any other potential problems such as parasites/worms....... also for this reason I would practise strict quarentine and hygeine with her keeping her well away from the male

Thanks

there are no dark spots on her belly and she is housed on paper roll here. I'm not planning on breeding them i have not been keeping geckos long enough to be comfy breeding them so she will be staying in her own viv.

Have been told that she is bug eyed and about a good weight so that covers that and we are going to the vet on monday so fingers crossed everything goes well for us

Belly Draging could also be a sign of Impaction, What substrate do you use?
