Smile my first leopard gecko! - 20-09-2010, 04:48 PM

Hi there,

I am new to this site.
I have been reading alot of forum's/threads for info on geckos.

I have just purchased my viv from gum tree.
its 18" X 18" X 18".
it has a mesh top.
and 2 front opening doors.
it is all glass, no wooden parts to it.

I am really looking forward to getting my wee lizard.

I am just really looking for some advise, and i do hope people wont mind helping me out.
(i know a alot of people might of already asked these questions a few times, so im sorry for asking)

I know that i need to use a heat mat, and that i have to use it under the tank, and too leave a 1cm gap between the mat and the tank......

Im just trying to work out the correct size to use......i was thinking of getting one that is 7" X 18" so the width is covered and it only comes just over a third along the length of the tank, so affectivley only a third is covered by the heat mat......not sure if that is the way to do it???

But only one problem i cannae find one that size, its either 11" X 10", which is too big or the one i fount is only 11" X 6", would that one be sufficient enough size for it or do i keep hunting for a bigger size???

I am really grateful for any and all help.

I have also read something about 12 hours light/dark?
the tank will be in my room, which i only go in a night but id have the light on and off a few times, which happens with me and my other half keep going in and out, wud that be a problem??

also i am going to use slate tiles, which my other half's mother has loads in her back garden soo im going to take a few, how do i clean them, i have read somewhere bout putting them in a really hot oven?
i can clean and scrub and use plenty of anit-bac spray on them.

I have given some thought as it quite tall i wanna use the height for the lil guy, so im gonna get a hide, to go on the hot side, find something for his/her moist hide and then what im gping to do is create another hide for the cool side which will be stuck in the corner, which i am going to create a tunnel system to go up the back and one side of the viv. i am thinking of using toilet roll tubes and paper mache and then mix a bit of sand with glue and cover the entire back and side covering to give it a nice look, an im thinking of making the tunnel systems look partially like creavices like in rock faces, leading to the top where ill have a small platform for the lil guy to sit on.

It will be fun to create it, i just need to know how to make it safe for the lil guy, cause obvious i was thinking of some sort of glue to create the thing. i was also thinking trying to find a redish sand to make it look like real rock face???

hopefully i can get some help and advice on this.

many thanks in advance for all and any comments.

oh one last thing, i dont think i need to provide and sort of special lighting for the lil guy do i??

many thanks

Well i have managed to find a heat mat that is 6" X 17" so that will cover an entire side, just will it be long enough to cover the length of the tank 6inches is a third of the length so i think it my be long enough.

Hi

I think as long as it is big enough for his hide & for him to stretch out on, then I'm sure it will be fine.

My matt only covers a small corner, but we have a top heat source 4 hours a day.

Since we took the thermostat off (Faulty ?) the matt gets a lot warmer & now he spends more time in the cool zone.
