Leopard Gecko Heating -
11-09-2010, 07:32 PM
Hi
We have a leo in a tank, 60cm x 45cm x 51cm high.
He has 2 heatmat's 7 watt, a cool area, 2 hides & a moist box.
His tank came with a Reptile one blue bulb, 75 watt & a 100 watt holder/shade.
The shade is massive & we were wondering, if there are smaller lamp holders/with/without a shade available ?
Would the blue bulb be best or a ceramic heat ammiter ?
We saw a leo in a pet shop, no lights, but happily basking under a ceramic lamp.
Our leo had a daylamp, he avoided the light , so now we have fitted a moonlight tube.
If we fit a heat lamp, it would be on in the evening & off by night with the heat matts on 24 hr fitted to a thermostat.
Does this sound ok ? or over the top ?
Thanks, spottymint.

hi , that seems ok , but leo's dont really bask , cos there nocturnal , get there heat from there belly evidently , although mine kinda sits under his red light that gives off heat , actually he acts kinda cranky by climbing the wall of his tank etc , even though i was told they dont climb ,and sitting ontop of his hide surveying his viv lol ( see picture ), but eats ok etc , and lies belly flat on the heatmat side quite alot , had an issue with him not eating for about a week , but thats resolved now
take care ,
tony

HI
When we saw the one in the shop basking, gave us the idea we will see him more.
He like's to survey his viv & proved very well that leo's can climb ! We gave him a new tank, with a foam background, he climbed straight up it, so he could check it out.
He's coming out with the blue moonlight, which is good.
We researched him when he was coming to us for a holiday, but now he's staying, we need to find more info, but everybody seems to contradict on ideas, ie substrate.
Thanks for your input, Spottymint.

Hi
This is what the Reptile one site say's about the blue moon tube,
The Reptile MoonLight tube is a low light fluorescent
tube that provides a soft light that replicates moonlight
while providing small amounts of UVA and UVB light.
These tubes are ideal for nocturnal species and can help
to replicate natural lighting conditions in any reptile or
amphibian enclosure
It gives off a blue light, like you get at full moon, looks nice at night & is suited to nocturnal species.
