Default Help with new setup - 21-06-2011, 09:46 PM

Thinking of getting a bigger vivarium and just wondering what you think to it and also help to choose the right things. This will be my first setup on my own as my viv I'm using now is a exo terra starter kit.

For vivarium I want a vivexotic lx36 3ftx1.5ftx1.5ft.

For lighting I was thinking Hagen T8 40w Fluorescent Light Unit - Double

Not sure what bulbs will be best to use though so please help?

What heat Matt will be best to use as well for a wooden viv? As they go inside I think?

Please tell me your opinions and ideas
Thanks Kent

I dont know about the light as i just use a single day light bulb hanging from the top, works fine for me, and alot cheaper, but the heat mat i do know, if your using repti-carpet(which i hope you are) you can just put it under the carpet, works fine for my little gecko, no burns or anything, you dont need a special heat mat, just make sure it covers 50% or less of the viv. And i suggest you do all the wiring before you put the viv together, as stupid me didn't, lol. hope this helps abit. X

Can i ask why your choosing to use a fluorescent light? As leos are nocturnal so have no need for one. If you want to view your leo at night invest in a night glo bulb as it's blue so doesn't disturb their nightly activities.

Any heat mat will do as stated above as long as it's covering 1/3 to 1/2 of the viv. Wooden vivs are good for keeping the heat in so good choice

What substrate do you plan on using? x

I use the vivexotic vivs and they are very well made. Easy to put together. I think you should shop around a bit though as you can get them for less than amazon. If you use a heat mat, get a mat stat to control the temp as they can get very warm if just left pluged in.

I use LED lights for daytime cycle as they give off no heat. I also use a low wattage blue LED for night viewing, but turn it off when I go to bed to give them at least 6 hours of natural darkness as they can see red and blue light and it should not be left on all night.

I would use lino for substrate as it is easy to clean and safe for the LG

Any further questions, just ask!
