Default Gutloading Mealies - 25-07-2010, 02:09 PM

Hi All

Short question. When Gutloading mealies, do you remove them from their box you buy them in (only seen them in a container with bran etc) and put them in a new container with only your gutloading food OR do you put the food in the container they come in.

Cheers

I remove them from the container and place them in a faunarium with no substrate, as the bran tends to quickly go mouldy if it gets damp, which it will if 'wet' fruit and veg such as apple or potato are used for gut-loading.

I breed my own mealies but I also don't use bran - it binds with calcium. Mine are in open tupperware type tubs (so that they don't get too humid) with oats, dry cat food or fish food flakes, plus some calcium - these are nutritious foods in their own right . You could use "bug grub" but I find that expensive for the amount I need. I add a small quantity of apple, carrot, dandelion or leafy greens etc. daily for moisture and extra gut load.

Cheers for the info. What type of cat food do you use?. Had a look in a leading supermarket but couldnt find a type what doesnt have chicken and duck. Or is this ok?

Cheers again
