Default Does anyone feed pinkies? - 08-02-2010, 12:14 PM

Have been reading around different sites and this seems to be a bit of a mixed bag?

Some people seem to encourage the occasional pinkie whilst others are very against it even suggesting that they are in fact a health risk?

I'm just wondering what people here think about this, is it something you would advise for or against?

My two little girls are a long way off from been big enough to handle a pinkie so all advice and opinions wanted.

personally I don't
I know some breeders use them as a boost for gravid females who have lost weight etc but I've found that a good plentiful diet of well-gutloaded livefood do the job just as well and healthier too
There are downsides especially if too often given such as Fatty Liver Disease, obesity, gout etc.... it's a bit like waxxies really (and no I don't use those either lol)

I was just going through your care sheet to see if you mentioned pinkies!

It does seem to be from reading around a very mixed bag of answers and given what you have said about proper gut loading I won't bother trying it.

If there is no extra benefit then what's the point.

*nods* even when I've had starving rescues brought in I don't use waxies or pinkies as I've found that using my normal livefood the leo's put on weight better, healthier and at a steadier rate ~ I personally feel that half the problem is that a lot of people like to 'humanise' their reps to a degree hence treats such as waxxies and pinkies (equivelant to chocolate for a dog ) ..... and while leo's may come across the odd baby mouse etc in the wild their not likely to come across waxxies all that often if at all lol (waxmoths lay their eggs in bee-hives where the waxxies live and grow by eating the wax, honey and bee-grubs only leaving the hive once they've pupated

oops got carried away again sorry bout that

It's always better to have to much info than not enough, especially when it comes to the care of animals etc.

I have never used pinkies either - just don't see the point in stuffing my Leos full of fatty food.
