Question Do crested gecko need heat other than room temp? - 30-03-2010, 09:48 AM

I'm getting a crested gecko near the end of the week, once i've set his tank up. I'm just wondering if i need a heat blub? I've been reading for months now on different sites, some say yes and others no. I came across this site only today, i really need to no for certain. I don't wanna cook the little guy, i live in the north of England, its freezing. Lol, but i do keep my house warm. I am new to the gecko world but do have other reptiles, a yemen Chameleon and a Chille rose. So any advice would be awesome.

It really depends upon the ambient daytime temperature of the room in which you intend to keep the crestie. If it's between about 21C - 27C (70F - 80F), then you won't require any additional heating. However, if it drops below 21C for prolonged periods, then you would need a heat source; just make sure that it's controlled by a thermostat (cresties are very susceptible to overheating and can die from exposure to temperatures above 29C (84F), so you'll need to ensure that temperatures don't become excessively high, especially during summer months).

If it helps, two of the better crested gecko care sheets can be found on the Rhac Shack and Treasure Crest websites: both are written by very experienced keeper / breeders and contain some excellent advice.
